Update — August 2026: CMS finalized six new CPT codes in the 97X3X adaptive behavior family for 2027. The 90-day publish-to-payer window closes at year-end. If you bill ABA and haven’t started the crosswalk, you have compliance and revenue exposure right now.

What Changes January 1, 2027

The current adaptive behavior CPT family (97151, 97153, 97154, 97155, 97156, 97157, 97158) is being restructured. Six new codes join the 97X3X series to capture: group adaptive behavior treatment with two behavior technicians, multi-family adaptive behavior guidance (parent training with 3+ families concurrent), adaptive behavior treatment via asynchronous digital data collection, extended assessment protocols beyond 8 hours, adaptive behavior treatment coordination with medical/psychiatric provider, and adaptive behavior transition planning (school-to-community handoff).
