Neuropsychological testing codes changed materially in 2019 (still confuses billers in 2026). The current stack: 96116 clinical assessment interview + 96130/96131 professional test admin/scoring + 96136/96137 technician test admin/scoring + 96146 computer test admin.
The 2026 Neuropsych Testing Stack
- 96116 — Neurobehavioral status exam, first hour (client interview + history)
- 96130 — Psychological testing eval services by physician/other qualified — first hour
- 96131 — Same as 96130 — each additional hour
- 96136 — Psychological testing admin/scoring by technician — first 30 min
- 96137 — Same as 96136 — each additional 30 min
- 96146 — Psychological testing by computer, single automated result
Common Denials 2026
- 96116 billed multiple times (should be once per assessment episode)
- 96130 concurrent same-day with 96136 payer-conflict
- Time-based unit count mismatched with documented time
